About this course

Azure is the public cloud offering from Microsoft where applications that run on virtual machines (VMs), can be run in what is known as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). IaaS is one of the most widely used services in the Azure, and supports building hybrid models where VMs that were traditionally run in private datacenters can now be run in the public cloud. This course teaches the various options for companies to make the transition and migrate those IaaS workloads.

Migrating to Microsoft Azure leveraging a systematic approach will be explored. Tactics for success such as decision making techniques on when to use manual approaches or leveraging automation will be covered. In addition, preferred practices for migrating IaaS workloads will be shared including: learning how to decide if rebuilding is the right approach or doing some type of Lift & Shift using the Tools Microsoft provides.

The services that run in IaaS rely heavily on the Storage, Compute and Networking capabilities of Azure. Specifically, virtual machines are where the majority of these services will run in the Microsoft Cloud. Different tools used for migrating workloads that use VMs will be explored. These include: using the Physical to VM disk tools, taking images of existing VMs and moving them to the Cloud manually or leveraging Azure Site Recovery as an almost zero downtime migration tool. Using the Azure Portal, Azure PowerShell cmdlets and other tools will be covered including preparing your VM images to be imported into Azure. Additional topics include capacity planning and moving large volumes of data to Microsoft Azure.

Azure Networking strategies for the migration and long-term hybrid cloud will be explored including Site to Site VPNs and ExpressRoute will also be examined.
